Chicago Mercantile Independent Battery, Light Artillery

Organized at Chicago, IL and mustered in August 29, 1862 and were assigned to duty at Camp Douglass, near Chicago till November 8 and then moved to Memphis, TN November 8 - 19. The Battery lost during service two Officers and five Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and also lost 11 Enlisted men by disease for a total loss of 18 lives. They were stationed at New Orleans, LA till June 1865 until ordered home to Chicago for mustering out on July 10, 1865.  The chronology below shows their assignments, service, and engagements with the enemy:

  • Artillery, 10th Division, 13th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee, to August

  • Ordered to New Orleans, LA August 6, thence to Brashear City

  • Western Louisiana Campaign October 3 to November 30

  • Camp at Franklin till December 19; moved to Algiers, LA

  • Expedition to the Rio Grande, TX December 26 to January 1, 1864

  • Battle of Sabine Cross Roads April 8; Battery cut to pieces and guns captured; retreat to Alexandria, thence to New Orleans, LA April 9 – 30

  • Artillery, 1st Division, 13th Army Corps to June

  • Defenses of New Orleans, LA to July

  • Duty at Camp Parapet, defenses of New Orleans till November; moved to Baton rouge November 1

  • Artillery Reserve, Dept. of the Gulf to November

  • Davidson’s Expedition against Mobile & Ohio R.R. November 27 to December 12

  • Moved to New Orleans December 31, thence to Baton Rouge and duty there till May 1865
