83rd Ohio Infantry Organized at Camp Dennison, Ohio in August and September of 1862. Moved to Covington September 3, 1862 to repel Kirby Smiths threatened attack on Cincinnati, OH. The Regiment lost during service four Officers and 52 Enlisted men that were killed and mortally wounded. They also lost two Officers and 161 Enlisted men by disease for a total loss of 219 men. Mustered out July 24, and discharged at Camp Dennison, OH August 10, 1865. Reference: The 83rd Ohio fought alongside the Chicago Mercantile Battery at many key battles in the Western Theater. It was known as the Greyhound Regiment. An outstanding regimental history of this unit was written by Thomas B. Marshall in 1912 (Cincinnati: Gibson & Perin Co.). |
