History of the 77th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, by William H. Bentley, is the only major regimental history written on this Illinois unit that fought alongside of the Chicago Mercantile Battery.  It was published in 1883 by Edward Hine, Printer, in Peoria, Illinois.  Although Bentley's book is extremely rare and difficult to locate, it may be retrieved on microfilm via interlibrary loan from local participating libraries.
