1st Independent Battery Light Artillery, Indiana

Organized at Evansville, IN August 5, 1861 and mustered in at Indianapolis, IN on August 16 and moved to St. Louis, MO. The Battery lost during service three Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and one Officer and 31 Enlisted men by disease for a total loss of 35 lives. Mustered out on August 22, 1865 at Montgomery, AL.  The chronology below shows their assignments, service, and engagements with the enemy:

  • March to Helena, AR May 25 – July 14 and duty there till October

  • Moved to Ironton, Pilot Know, MO and operations in Southeast Missouri till March

  • Ordered to St. Genevieve, MO March 5, thence to Milliken’s Bend, LA March 14 – 25 and duty there till April 25

  • Movement on Bruinsburg and turning Grand Gulf April 25 – 30

  • Battle of Thompson’s Hill, Port Gibson, May 1; Champion Hill, May 16, and Big Black River May 17

  • Siege of Vicksburg, MS May 18 to July 4; assaults on Vicksburg May 19 and 22

  • Advance on Jackson, MS May 4 – 10; siege of Jackson July 10 – 17

  • Artillery, 14th Division, 13th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee to July

  • Artillery, 1st Division, 13th Army Corps, Dept. of the Tennessee to August and Dept. of the Gulf to September

  • Duty at Vicksburg till August 20, ordered to New Orleans, LA, duty there and at Brashear City till October

  • Western Louisiana Campaign October 3 to November 30
