130th Illinois Infantry

The 130th Regiment Infantry was organized at Camp Butler, Springfield, IL and mustered in October 25, 1862.  They were moved almost immediately (November 11 - 17, 1862) to Memphis, TN.  In December 1862 the Regiment was attached to Reserve Brigade, District of Memphis, 18th Army Corps (Old), Dept. of the Tennessee.  The Regiment during service had two Officers and 18 Enlisted men that were killed and it lost four Officers and 153 Enlisted men through disease for a total of 177 men.  The chronology below shows their assignments, service, and engagements with the enemy:

  • Duty at Fort Pickering, Memphis, TN till March 27, 1863, District of Memphis, 16th Army Corps

  • Moved to Milliken’s Bend, LA, March 27 – 31, and duty there till April 25

  • Movement on Bruinsburg and turning Grand Gulf April 25 – 30

  • Battle of Magnolia Hills, Port Gibson, May 1

  • Champion Hill May 16; Big Black River May 17

  • Siege of Vicksburg, MS, May 18 – July 4; assaults on Vicksburg May 19 and 22

  • Advance on Jackson, MS July 5 – 10; siege of Jackson July 10 – 17; and   reconnaissance to Pearl River July 11

  • 2nd Brigade, 10th Division, 18th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee to July, 1863

  • 2nd Brigade, 4th Division, 13th Army Corps, Dept. of the Tennessee, to August 1863

  • Camp at Big Black till August 13; ordered to New Orleans, LA, August 13 and duty there till October; Western Louisiana Campaign October 3 – November 30

  • At New Iberia till December 6

  • Moved to New Orleans, thence to Pass Cavallo, TX December 6 – 20 and duty there till February 1864

  • Reconnaissance on Matagorda Peninsula January 21, moved to Algiers, thence to Franklin, LA

  • Duty at Pass Cavallo, TX till February 1864

  • Red River Campaign March 10 – May 22

  • Advance from Franklin to Alexandria, LA March 14 – 26

  • Bayou De Paul, Carroll’s Mills April 8

  • Battle of Sabine Cross Roads April 8; Regiment mostly captured at Sabine Cross Roads and confined at Camp Ford at Tyler, TX for 13 months

  • Retreat to Morganza May 13 – 20

  • Attached to Dept. of the Gulf to June, 1864; garrison duty at New Orleans, LA June 1864 to January 1865

  • 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, 19th Army Corps, Dept. of the Gulf, to October 1864

  • Defenses of New Orleans, LA to January 1865

  • Consolidated with 77th Illinois Infantry January 25, 1985 and in Campaign against Mobile and its defenses February to April

  • Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely March 26 –April 9; assault and capture of Fort Blakely April 9; occupation of Mobile April 12

  • Expedition to Tombigbee River and McIntosh Bluffs April 13 – May 9

  • At Mobile till July; Regiment reorganized at Mobile July 11, 1865

  • 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 13th Army Corps (New), Military Division West Mississippi, to August 1865

  • Ordered to New Orleans and mustered out August 15, 1865
